Greens of Envy, Hamilton County’s Top-Notch Course Attract Golfers Galore
“…The name says it all at the recently opened 18-hole course spread over 218 acres. Extensive bunkering with over 125 individual sand traps gives the course a sinister appearance, like whitecaps on a churning sea of green. Hole No. 13 is particularly tough and is rated by area golf pros as among the five most difficult in the Indianapolis area. Named “Eternal Torment,” this par-5 hole spans 725 yards from the back tees. Here, sand bunkers swarm the fairway’s entire length, the green slopes, and the wind is constant to delight devil-may-care golfers with tee-to-pin anguish. Finally, there’s no redemption to be found on the 18th hole, which gleefully swallows hooks and slices. Golfers who follow the straight and narrow path from the tees to the greens find groomed bent grass. Stray from the course, though, and tall grasses in the rough areas are a menacing snare. Depending on which set of six tees a golfer chooses, the course can be the state’s longest at 7,754 yards or among the shortest. Purgatory tests golfers with a 142 USGA slope rating, one of the highest in Indiana…”
